Meet Laura Kontu
Manager in Helsinki
“I’ve grown tremendously – both professionally and personally – and made unforgettable memories along the way.”

Hi Laura! How did you end up at Svalner Atlas?
I decided to apply to Svalner Atlas (formerly known as Alder) when I came across an open job posting. The name Alder was familiar to me, especially in the field of transfer pricing, through my studies. Petteri had been a guest lecturer in a few international taxation classes, speaking particularly about transfer pricing. I remember getting the impression that Alder was a small, agile, and ‘fresh’ firm, full of professionals. I recall thinking back then that I’d like to work at Alder someday. I started with a 3-month internship in the transfer pricing team, after which I transitioned directly into a permanent position.
Which tasks excite you the most in your work, and why?
I’m excited by all new assignments and tasks that allow me to learn something new. I thrive on solving problems and being outside my comfort zone because that’s where growth truly happens.
What is the most challenging aspect of your work?
The fact that answers often can’t be found directly in textbooks or the Tax Administration’s guidelines. In my work, I have to (and get to) use problem-solving skills, reasoning, and sometimes even creativity.
What is the best thing about working at Svalner Atlas?
The absolute best thing about working at Svalner Atlas is the team! It’s home to top professionals in their field who are passionate about their expertise, yet the company also values life beyond work (work-life balance). Svalner Atlas’ current organizational model and size make it possible to advance in your career and grow your expertise in the direction you choose. For example, I’ve personally had the opportunity to expand my responsibilities across a variety of subject areas.

What do you think are the things that Svalner Atlas does particularly well?
At Svalner Atlas, work-life balance is a core value that genuinely shows in everyday work. The team is truly caring—everyone can feel like a valued colleague. I think Svalner Atlas has an exceptionally warm atmosphere, which makes coming to work genuinely enjoyable every day. I also appreciate the hybrid work opportunities, which allow for flexible working arrangements, even occasionally from places like Lapland.
How would you describe the work community at Svalner Atlas?
In my opinion, the best thing about Svalner Atlas is definitely the work community. First of all, the company has a low hierarchy and a culture that values all employees. The atmosphere is exceptionally warm, making it always pleasant to come to work.
What are your favorite memories from your career at Svalner Atlas so far?
I have so many favorite memories! Some of the absolute best moments are the spontaneous long lunches or coffee breaks with different colleagues that brighten up the day. The annual spring gala is definitely one of the highlights of the year, it’s a chance to dress up in an evening gown and bring a plus-one to celebrate a successful financial year. Other favorite memories with coworkers include the Flow Festival, company marathon relay, Saimaa Cycle Tour, golf championships, and countless tryouts of different sports. I truly appreciate the active team, with whom I’ve had the chance to experience so much.

What advice or tips would you give to someone considering a career at Svalner Atlas?
If you’re at the beginning of your career and unsure about what you want to specialize in, I highly recommend applying to Svalner Atlas. Here, you get the chance to work on a wide variety of tasks based on your interests. If you’re more experienced and considering a change, I’d also encourage you to explore opportunities at Svalner Atlas. You can always reach out to me — or really any of our employees — to ask about our experiences working here. We occasionally have open positions, but I also recommend sending an open application.
What would you like to say to someone who, one day, reads this career story and wonders whether they should submit a job application?
I’ve never regretted sending in my application, not for a day. Over the years, I’ve grown tremendously in my professional career, probably more than I ever imagined. I’ve made new friends, collected unforgettable and fun experiences, and genuinely enjoyed working here. The substance of the work might be similar elsewhere, but it’s the community that keeps me here. So I wholeheartedly encourage you to apply, even the interview process is so pleasant that there’s no need to be nervous about it.
